The Church and Technology

by lynnmoon | 15th November 2009

Being that I’m a Christian and that I’m a techie kind of person; I’m rather interested in how technology is being used in and effecting the church as a whole. I love the church (not a specific one mind you, but the collective body of believers in Christ) and love to see us reaching as many folks as we can, in as many ways as we can, through as many avenues as we can. he he…I love to see interacting online, even arguing the finer points of scripture, sharing our favorite links and online reference items with each other. It makes me feel all gushy inside (does that make me a nerd?).

Likewise, I love how at this stage of the Internet, what a person can do with the available technology is AMAZING!!! And very often it’s free. And I suppose that’s why it really hurts me that more of us AREN’T taking advantage of this new medium and using it to it’s best advantage. I thought about this fact this evening while browsing the web for a few sermons. There are a lot of great teachers and ministers online and I was thinking of a couple of my local favorites that I can’t find online. And thought to myself….what a shame. They are great folks, with great messages and voices that cry to be heard!!!! There really isn’t any reason their material can’t be available to a wider audience via the Internet. The cost to move it online is virtually nonexistant given that most actually have all the components onhand to make it so.

But alas, some of us remain afraid of (or ignorant of) technology. And many of those that are willing to use it, seem to use it poorly. Like the plethora of Public Access channel preachers. OMG, do people review thier shows in light of all the others around. I am convinced that some of these shows are doing the exact opposite of what they would like to do which, hopefully, is draw attention to the Light of God’s word and shine at least a favorable light on thier congregation. But anyways….this week I’ve decided to blog a bit on the church and technology. Stay tuned!
